TROPICAL ROOTS

Yuca root, Freshway Produce offers a diversified sourcing program from Costa Rica and Ecuador in order to maintain a year-round supply. Our relationship with our Yuca growers has been long term since the conception of our company. This is the most popular tropical root, and it appeals to most demographics. It is commonly used in Caribbean and South American cooking.  Similar to a potato, it can be baked or mashed. Yuca is a versatile food that has been shown to reduce high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Malanga sourced from Central America and our family owned farms in Ecuador. We consider this root one of our signature items, because of our widely recognized premium pack. It is a starchy root vegetable similar in appearance to a yam.  It can be peeled, boiled, or mashed like a potato.  Popular uses include fritters and chips. It is uniquely one of the most hypoallergenic foods in the world, and its flour is easily digestible even by persons with extensive allergies.  Malanga is also high in fiber and potassium.

Eddos are sourced from Central America and our family-owned farms in Ecuador. It is a starchy root vegetable similar to the malanga, although in a smaller version.  It can be peeled, boiled, or mashed like a potato.  Popular uses include fritters and chips.  Also, high in fiber and potassium.

Ñames/Yams (White, Yellow, Sweet, Negro, and Yampee), Our company has a diverse sourcing program coming from farms located in the Caribbean (Jamaica), Central America (Costa Rica), and South America (Colombia). At Freshway Produce we offer our customers the convenience of a “one-stop shop” where you could buy all these different types of yams at the same location on a year-round basis. They can be cooked in different ways (boiled, mashed or roasted). The flavor is tasty and it has a similar to a potato.

Boniato/Batata, Our boniato program is mainly sourced out of South Florida. Our company has worked for several years directly with farmers in the Redlands in order to ensure year-round supply and the best quality. Boniatos/Batatas are part of the same plant family of sweet potato with a milder taste.

Calabaza, Our company mainly sources this product from Central America, and in particularly Costa Rica. Since day one our growers of Calabaza have provided us with exceptional quality. To us, they are not just growers, but they have become our friends and an integral part of the Freshway Family. From the regions of Costa Rica, and Central America we pack in both boxes and bags. They can be baked or steamed and are perfect for soups. Freshway’s boxed Calabaza is one of our most popular presentations sought after by a wide clientele.

Chayote (pronounced chah-YOH-teh) Our company mainly sources green, black and white varieties from Central America (Mexico and Costa Rica). Freshway works with growers in the Cartago region of Costa Rica.  Its location 4,000 feet above sea level creates the perfect microclimate for production and year-round supply. It is a very popular item with our customers, due to its versatility in cooking in salads, salsa, and fried in slices. It has a mild flavor and is commonly served with seasonings. It can be boiled, stuffed, mashed, or baked. Also, Chayote squash is rich in Vitamin C and amino acids. It is often referred to as the “vegetable pear” due to its similarity in shape.
